Well, Big Mama (just a nickname, not a description) and I
are now empty nesters. Tiny Dancer is away at college for her sophomore year,
and the Bear just left this morning, for the Peace Corps and Morocco. I have been getting maudlin lately as the last
of our four were leaving. Of course Big Mama (just a nickname, not a description)
actually cried.
We are now going forward with the plans of getting the
Hacienda ready for sale and putting it on the market. Once it has been sold, we
are retiring and hitting the road as full time rv’ers.
We sometimes get second thoughts… We do love the Hacienda, its’
woods, its’ privacy. Sitting at the fire ring, listening to the Owls. Seeing
the Deer in the yard. The other day, when Big Mama (just a nickname, not a description)
and I were all alone for the weekend. I had to put a sticker on her car. I had
just gotten up, I wasn’t wearing any clothes yet, so I just walked outside and
put the sticker on the car, only wearing my flip-flops. Why you ask? Because I
could, I just felt like it… No one could see me without a serious case of
trespass. I will miss this place. It was a perfect location to raise children.
They had their own woods in which to build forts. We had the land on which they
could have any pet they may want and that we parents were willing to care for.
This included, a horse, chickens, rabbits, several hamsters, cats and dogs.
It has changed drastically since we moved into in late March
of 1994. Housing developments surround our oasis. So many nearby trees have
been cleared for the developments that we can now hear the interstate 2.5 miles
away. The road on which we live, a dead end since we moved here, will soon be
the entrance to another new development. Traffic will become worse, making it
more difficult to get out of our driveway.
We now have no pets, or children, in this 4000 sq ft on this
6.936 acres of woods. It is quiet, and uneventful. Big Mama (just a nickname,
not a description) and I will most likely only use the kitchen, our bedroom
(satellite tv), and the laundry room… Around 600 sq ft of our house. People
find it hard to believe or understand why we would want to leave this place. While
it has been home, it really isn’t home any longer. It’s just where Big Mama
(just a nickname, not a description) and I happen to live because we work in
the area. Once Big Mama (just a nickname, not a description) retires in the
spring, there is nothing to keep us in the area. Yes she has family here, and
we will come back to visit, but this isn’t our home. We aren’t “from” here.
This is just where we, as military brats, ended up.
I was a very early
adopter of facebook (I deleted my account almost 2 years ago), and I had as my
hometown, the place of my birth. I only lived there the first 3 years of my
life. Number 1 daughter gave me a load of crap about it because I have lived in
our current location for 32 years (10 years in our first house, 22 in the
current one), she said that this is where I am from, and she was and is correct…
I just never really felt like this was “home”. It is for our 4 children, so I guess it is for
me also. This is also why we, as military brats, can sell everything and live
in an RV. We don’t really feel connected to any one place.
I don’t know if I have regular readers, I will be most
likely wrapping up this blog and will be starting a new one to detail Big Mama
(just a nickname, not a description) and my life as Full time RV’ers. I started
this blog as a way to scream into the darkness my political frustrations. I am
fairly sure it cost me a contracting job in 2011. Since then I have toned down
most of my rhetoric. I needed to make it to retirement so I could retire and
that has almost come to pass. As for the current political mess… Well, that is
what it is. A mess. A lying, cheating, meglomaniacal, millionaire candidate
running against Donald Trump, who isn’t all that great either.
So I will leave you with one thought:-
Johnson For President…
