Being A Dad

I am a father, a dad. When you first realize that that moniker is now yours, it is kind of scary. Actually I was 'Ada' first, not 'Dad', but I knew exactly what it meant. The first full sentence my eldest princess uttered (offspring #1), was 'Hi Ada!'.
Allot of responsibilities come with being a Dad;

  • Making the perfect peanut butter and jelly or peanut butter and fluff sandwich
  • The art of washing little feet and squirting the bar of soap between little toes so it tickles
  • Making Macaroni and Cheese 'Just Right'
  • Belly flopping at bed time
  • Singing bedtime songs (badly)
  • Getting into holidays and making them more fun (Halloween and Christmas)
  • Skipping down Main Street in the Magic Kingdom, after it has been cleared for the parade.. while singing 'Zippity do dah' and holding hands with two of your princesses.
  • Keeping calm during emergencies and rushing injured children to the emergency room, or dentist
  • When your tiny little princess is going in for surgery, not shedding a tear, even though you are terrified so she won't be scared. Then holding it back longer so Mom won't be so scared.
  • Being the Den leader for 20 wild boys for 5 years, just to spend time with your son
  • Scaring all of the Boys that come to date your daughters, because all boys are evil...
  • Sitting through numerous dance recitals and acting interested.
These things didn't come natural, they were OJT, and you never know if they made a difference. You never really know if you really mattered as they grow up and you are replaced by the boyfriends or girlfriends. Then you see things that they write and hear what they say about you, and you realize that maybe, just maybe.. While bungling along, winging it, you somehow did a good job.

Being Dad, Daddy, Ada, is the hardest and best job in my life, now it is half over.. I have two left, I hope I don't mess up.. Then I will have to start all over.. I will be GranPa...
